About

TOMARIBI (泊まり火) is an independent web guide to private rental villas and small villa resorts across Japan, for anniversaries, workations and group trips. We organise facts (amenities, capacity, price range, area) on the same basis for every property.

How it started

It began with one night at a seaside whole-house villa on Awaji Island. Having the sea, the sunset, the open-air bath and time with friends entirely to ourselves was more satisfying than any luxury hotel we had stayed at. A whole house, not a room; a place's own time, not uniform service.

The sea and the mountains, hot springs, four distinct seasons, the food of each region. Japan's charm is not something you observe through a hotel window; you feel it by staying in the place itself. We came to believe that private villas and glamping, not conventional hotels, are the way to experience Japan at its fullest. That conviction is where this site began.

Yet finding "the next one" was hard, information was scattered across booking sites and ads, with no common standard. So we built the place we wished existed: a quiet, fact-based catalogue of private villas, compared on the same terms.

What drives us

We research every property with our own eyes, reading the official sources, confirming amenities and capacity, and recording where each fact came from. And when a place earns it, we recommend it wholeheartedly. Verified facts, and the genuine urge to go: keeping both lit is the promise behind the name TOMARIBI ("a lodging fire").

What we value

See our editorial policy for listing criteria, verification and how ads are kept separate from editorial.
