Waiting for a Sea of Clouds: Autumn's Scenery That Lasts About an Hour

· 泊まり火編集部

A sea of clouds is not something you can request. How damp the previous day was, how far the temperature fell overnight, whether the morning is windless. Only when those three align does the valley fill with white. Even at places known for it, the hit rate through the season is far from high.

Autumn is considered the season to try because it delivers the hardest of those conditions, the cooling. Days are still warm while nights drop sharply under a clear sky. The larger that gap, the more readily water vapour near the ground turns to fog. That is the mechanism behind the rule that clear, windless mornings produce the best displays.

The awkward part is that a sea of clouds does not last. Once the sun climbs and the ground warms, it dissolves without ceremony. The window is roughly an hour around dawn, which makes driving to a viewpoint a losing strategy. Sleeping there the night before is simply the reliable method.

Nights bring a sky full of stars, and on autumn mornings, when the temperature swing is wide, an early sea of clouds is sometimes visible. Hiking, river trekking, cycling and horse riding are available nearby, and dinner is a BBQ of domestic beef and local produce. Look at the stars, sleep, get up while it is still dark: two appointments with the sky in one night.

Glamping limited to three groups per day in Minano, Chichibu, Saitama. Every unit is a fully private dome suite with a heated private pool and a fire terrace. Chichibu is only about 80 kilometers from central Tokyo yet has gorges, seas of cloud and the three Chichibu shrines. Dinner uses local Chichibu specialities. Basins trap fog by their shape, which improves the odds of catching a good morning.

Decide what to do with the mornings you lose

Some mornings you get up early for a sea of clouds and nothing is there. More of them, in fact. Deciding in advance how to spend that time takes the sting out of it. Boil water and make coffee, light the sauna, walk a garden where nobody else is awake. The quiet known only to people who got up before dawn is there whether the clouds are or not.
