Check First Whether They Open in Winter: Choosing a Stay for the Snow Season
You loved a place in summer, you go to book it again for winter, and only then do you find out: it is closed. Private rentals and glamping sites are not hotels, and many of them do not stay open all year. Choosing a stay for the snow season starts before the photographs, with the operating calendar.
First, are they open?
Appi no Mori Glamping sits inside Appi Kogen Resort, known for one of the largest ski areas in Tohoku, and yet it opens only for the green season from spring to autumn. Oku-Toya Club in Hokkaido runs April to November and closes for the winter. Being near a ski slope and being open in the snow are two different facts.
Others state year-round operation plainly. From P in Hakuba built its year-round dome tents with a double-layered, insulated construction and air conditioning in every unit. Sweet Grass in Kita-Karuizawa, at the foot of Mount Asama, is a year-round campground with a wood-fire culture of its own. Whether a place was designed to be slept in during winter tends to show up in exactly this kind of sentence.
Fifteen minutes from the slopes: Reposer Hakuba
A whole-house rental in Hakuba, Nagano, about 15 minutes by car from JR Hakuba Station and the local ski areas. It has a private sauna and a terrace for BBQ, sleeps up to ten, and takes dogs. The individual buildings are about five minutes by car from the main house.
On a skiing trip, proximity converts directly into energy. Whether you make the first lift decides how the whole day is spent.
A shuttle that reaches the slopes: GLAMPROOK Iizuna Kogen
An all-inclusive glamping resort in Iizuna, Nagano, looking out over Lake Reisenji and the five peaks of northern Shinshu. Seven room types centre on a twin dome tent that separates living space from bedroom. Dinner is Italian by chef Akira Watanabe at FARM AKIRA, with steak and pizza from a stone oven, and lounge bar drinks from 20:00 are included.
In winter the access is what matters. A free shuttle bus runs from Mure Station on the Shinano Railway Kita-Shinano line, and in winter a shuttle also runs to Iizuna Resort Ski Area. For anyone who does not want to drive on snow, that removes the hardest part.
Beside a hot spring, below Geto Kogen: Santa House GETO
Log cabins and trailer houses at the foot of Geto Kogen in Kitakami, Iwate, rented whole for one to five guests from around 8,000 yen a night. BBQ grills and kitchen sets can be hired, so you can arrive empty-handed. There is a hot spring facility right beside it, and in winter Geto Kogen Ski Resort is close.
It is about 20 minutes by car from Kitakami Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen, which makes a ski trip by train workable.
Cooling off in the snow: Oak Village
A glamping site in the beech woods of Misorano in Hakuba. Choose between trailer houses with IH kitchens, bathrooms and washing machines, or dome tents, and use the hot spring at the adjacent hotel free of charge during your stay. In January 2026 a fully private lodge-style sauna opened, looking out over the snow, with a Harvia stove, a cold bath and space to cool off outside.
Hakuba Happo-one and Hakuba Goryu are both within easy reach in winter, and it is about seven minutes by car from JR Hakuba Station, with a free shuttle between 9:00 and 17:00 by prior arrangement.
The road turns to winter before the stay does
Even when a property is open, the road there is a separate question. When a property puts the warning on its own website, take it as a place where this actually happens.
- Forest Side Yamanakako (Yamanashi) states that snow tyres are required in winter.
- Hoko Glamping (Ena, Gifu) warns of snow and ice at its altitude and recommends anti-slip measures.
- DURAX Kyotango Kumihama LABO (Kyoto) notes that heavy-snow periods call for snow tyres or equivalent.
If you are renting a car, winter tyres can only be specified when booking it. It is the kind of problem you discover on arrival, so settle it the same day you settle the stay.
Winter changes the menu too
Plenty of properties swap their food with the season, and the more a place leans on BBQ, the more winter looks different.
- Foresta Aso Kurumagaeri (Kumamoto) centres on premium wagyu BBQ, which may switch to a hotpot plan in winter.
- FREE AND EASY CAMP RESORT (Komono, Mie) turns its BBQ dinner into sukiyaki in winter.
- Namioto Terrace Resort Kagoshima adds a winter sukiyaki plan with Kagoshima kuroge wagyu.
- Luxury Trailers Rikyu Ise (Mie) fills its Shigaraki-ware open-air bath with water carried from Shin-Misato Onsen in winter.
The same property serves something else entirely in the cold months. It surprises anyone who booked from the summer photographs, but a hotpot under a roof on a freezing night is usually the better deal.
