Ama occupies Nakanoshima, one island making up the whole town. With a population of around 2,300 it is known nationally for its island-study programme and its work on regional revival. It is also where the retired Emperor Gotoba was exiled.
From the mainland you cross by ferry or high-speed boat from Shichirui or Sakaiminato. Rates start at 8,500 yen per person.
