Miyama

A mountain village of thatched-roof houses, often called Japan's archetypal countryside. In the hamlets of Miyama are whole-house thatched stays with irori hearths and wood-fired baths, for satoyama seasons and silence.

Access: Bus from JR Sonobe or Hiyoshi Station; about 90 min by car from Kyoto. A car is handy.
