This free-flowing hot-spring ryokan stands in the Zao Onsen village of Yamagata and, alongside Japanese, Western and Japanese-Western rooms, has a rare rooftop glamping site with a 360-degree view of the Zao mountains. Two dome types (SUNRISE, facing the morning sun, and SUNSET, facing the evening) are each paired with a Japanese room with its own bath and toilet, so older guests and families with small children can stay with ease. In summer you can enjoy a rooftop BBQ, and a projector is available to rent to turn the dome into a private theater. The baths range from a cypress open-air view bath with free-flowing strongly acidic sulfur spring water to indoor and open-air baths of a milder artificial spring, and dinner features Yamagata beef, sangen pork and seafood as local and creative cuisine. It is about 40 minutes by bus from JR Yamagata Station or 20 minutes by car from the Yamagata-Zao IC; check the official site for rates and availability.
