On the rooftop is a glamping setup that is rare even in Tohoku, with a 360-degree panorama of the Zao mountain range: two dome types facing the sunrise and the sunset, each paired with a Japanese-style room with bath and toilet. 3. Toshitoland
A hot-spring leisure resort on a hill overlooking the Yokote Basin in Ugo, Akita. 4. Appi no Mori Glamping

5. CYMBALS
An experience-focused resort that opened in April 2025 next to the Iwaizumi roadside station. The ways to stay are remarkably varied: guest rooms with saunas and artificial-onsen open-air baths, glamping units with barrel saunas, a whole-house kominka (traditional farmhouse) rental, and even the Blue Train “Nihonkai” sleeper carriage.

Dome tents set on the schoolyard of “Iitoko,” a repurposed former school complex in Ono, Fukushima Prefecture. Its signature features are classroom-based fun (including one of Japan’s largest permanent Mini 4WD racing courses, a music room and e-sports), plus BBQs of local Fukushima ingredients in an all-weather space. 7. Hibiki Sauna Glamping
Sauna glamping in Sukagawa, Fukushima, rented to one group per day for up to 25 guests. A 10-meter-diameter mega dome tent (said to be the first of its kind in Tohoku) and a Japanese-modern cottage with a hinoki bath are joined by a barrel sauna for up to 8, a cold plunge bath, a dog run and open fires. 8. Onsen Glamping Otaru Hanaemi
Onsen glamping limited to three groups per day at Asarigawa Onsen in Otaru, Hokkaido. Tips for choosing
- Choose by how the onsen fits in. Hokkaido and Tohoku are notable for glamping sites attached to hot-spring areas. Whether you’ll have an in-room or private-rental bath, or use a shared bathhouse, differs by facility. Deciding your preferred bathing style first makes it easier to narrow down.
- Check the season and operating period. Some highland and mountain facilities operate only in the green season. If you’re considering a winter stay, confirm the operating period and heating on the official website.
