GLAMPING BASE enCamp sits in the woods of Shiojiri in central Nagano, surrounded by mountains, a river and Lake Midori. Its air-conditioned tents come in four types, from compact dome tents to large eight-metre domes with a kids' climbing wall and slide, and Japan's first shell-shaped large tents, each with a covered private deck for all-weather BBQ and campfires. Dinner is a BBQ of Nagano-raised meat and seasonal vegetables whose menu changes through the year, while breakfast features hamburgers and hot sandwiches made with bread from a popular local bakery. There is plenty to do, including ziplines, a trampoline, molkky and a collection of more than 40 board games from around the world, plus seasonal experiences such as pizza-making and smoking. Dogs are welcome in the shell tent RICHY, which has its own dog run, and guests can use the hot spring and showers at the neighbouring lodge Hidamari no Ie. It is about 15 minutes by car from the Shiojiri IC, roughly two and a half hours from Tokyo.
