Hamasaki faces the Genkai Sea, close to Niji-no-Matsubara, one of Japan's three great pine groves. Planted by the Karatsu domain in the early Edo period as a windbreak, the black pines run about 4.5 kilometres long and 500 metres deep. Karatsu Castle and the squid of Yobuko are both within driving distance.
