A whole-house lodging on a hill overlooking the farmland of Hida Kokufu, in Kokufu, Takayama City, Gifu. An itakura storehouse that has marked a hundred years was moved to this open site and renovated. Its bearing, having travelled through the seasons, delivers the luxury of plainness and a certain stillness. One group stays at a time.
Inside, large windows take in a panorama, a double-height space provides measured openness, and an unusual counter kitchen anchors the plan. Combined with old timber gathered from local farmhouses, the result is modern and easy to be in.
Because no one else is around, the house works for talking with family or friends, or for losing yourself in something. It suits people who want to concentrate on writing or reading. The property suggests that hobbies practised in an unfamiliar setting, whether making things, music, yoga, soba making or tea ceremony, become something else entirely. It also serves as a workation base, with the window's view to break against.
It makes a base for Kamikochi, the Shinhotaka Ropeway and the Okuhida hot-spring villages. Driving from central Takayama toward Hida City takes about 15 minutes. The base rate is 28,000 yen per night for two adults.
