Making a Morning Out of Christmas: December 24th in a House Booked for One Group

· 泊まり火編集部

A restaurant Christmas dinner has no morning.

It starts at seven and ends at ten. A plate arrives at the end of the course, you leave, you get the train home. It is not bad. It is just that the movement starts the moment the best part finishes.

Stay somewhere and a morning gets attached.

On the properties’ side, Christmas is not a special day

Something to get out of the way first.

Of the 654 listings, the number mentioning Christmas is 0. Three mention illuminations. 31 write about winter conditions the way they do for the New Year, but on Christmas nobody writes anything.

That does not mean nobody runs a Christmas package. Some surely do. It just does not reach the prominent parts of an official site or a year-round description.

So “whole-house stays with a Christmas package” is not a search you can run. Instead you assemble it from conditions, and the conditions that matter at Christmas all happen to be published.

The condition of seeing nobody

This is the one that counts most.

128 listings state that they take one group a day, counting spelling variants: 88 villas and 40 glamping sites. You are the only people staying there that night, and from check-in to check-out your path never crosses another guest’s.

At Christmas this matters because the town is the crowded option. Restaurants run two sittings, the streets are full, and everywhere you go somebody else is having the same evening. A one-group-a-day stay sits on the other side of that.

Why properties limit their numbers is the subject of the economics of one group a day. From the guest’s side the reason hardly matters. Only the fact that nobody else is there.

Hot water, and fire

Stack conditions onto one-group-a-day and it comes out like this.

  • Onsen in the unit: 23
  • Fireplace: 20
  • Wood stove mentioned: 12
  • Projector: 18
  • Meals served: 36

The numbers are small, so stacking too many leaves nothing. One or two is realistic.

Two people in a house for ten

Listing a place for ten when there are two of you is not a mistake.

The 248 that publish a per-house rate charge the same whether you fill the capacity or not. Two people and ten people cost the same, so using a large house for two becomes a real option, as counted in by the house or by the head.

At the 72 that price per person, two people pay for two. Under either unit, being a couple is never the disadvantage.

Three bedrooms and you use one. A living room far too big. That kind of excess suits Christmas rather well.

Cook, or do not

Dinner comes down to two options.

258 listings mention meals or ingredients included. Narrowed to one-group-a-day it is 36, and choosing from those means cooking nothing. La Nature and Woodland Bothy above are in that set.

The other option is to buy and bring. The cake comes from a shop and goes onto a plate. As written in there is no toothbrush, 311 listings have a kitchen but what is inside it usually is not written down. If you plan anything ambitious, ask about pans and tableware first.

Either way, the difference from a restaurant is that nothing cuts off the time. Start eating at eight or start at ten.

About the morning of the 25th

This is the part worth saying.

What stays with you from Christmas is probably not the evening of the 24th but the morning of the 25th.

Last night’s plates are still in the sink, the ash in the stove has gone cold, and outside the curtains an ordinary weekday is starting. Nobody comes to wake you and breakfast has no set time. You make coffee and go over yesterday once more.

A dinner-only Christmas has none of that, because it ended when you left the restaurant. Choosing to stay means attaching a morning to the same night.

Before you book

  1. Whether there is a Christmas package. It does not appear in the listings, so ask the official site directly.
  2. The pricing unit. Per house and two people pay the same total. Per person and you pay for two.
  3. Dinner. Served or not. If not, buy the cake and the food before you arrive.
  4. Heating. Late December is cold. For glamping, see is winter glamping cold.

To filter by conditions, use find a stay. Stays for two are collected in private villas for two.

Driving past the town

The places people gather at Christmas are fairly fixed. The station forecourt, the shopping centre, restaurants booked out weeks ahead.

You drive past all of that, out to somewhere with not one light in view. You collect the key, go inside without meeting anyone. Light the fire, fill the bath, put the cake you brought in the fridge.

And then nobody disturbs you until morning.

FAQ

Are there whole-house stays with a Christmas package?
The listings cannot tell you. None of the 654 mention Christmas and only three mention illuminations. Unlike the New Year, nothing about special treatment appears, so whether a Christmas package exists has to be checked on each official site.
Can we avoid seeing other guests?
At a stay that takes one group a day, you are the only guests that night. 128 of the 654 listings state it, 88 villas and 40 glamping sites. From check-in to check-out your path never crosses another guest's.
Is a large house wasteful for two people?
It depends on the pricing unit. The 248 that publish a per-house rate charge the same whether you fill the capacity or not, so two people in a place for six or ten is not unusual. The 72 that price per person charge for two.
Will dinner be provided?
258 of the 654 mention meals or ingredients included. Among the ones that take one group a day it is 36, and choosing from those means cooking nothing. At a room-only stay you buy the cake and the food and bring them.
When should we book for Christmas?
The 24th and 25th move faster when they fall on a weekend. A one-group-a-day stay has no alternative room, so if the dates are fixed, earlier is safer. Booking windows are rarely published, so ask once you have a shortlist.
