A one-group-per-day cottage standing alone on roughly 3,000 square metres at Kojima in Yakushima Town, Kagoshima, in the south of the island. Mountains rise behind it, with forest and sea in front.
It was designed by William Brower, an architect resident on Yakushima. The form is an unusual fan shape, built generously from natural materials that are gentle on people and the environment. Care shows in how the building sits with the landscape and in the views from inside.
As the name Views suggests, the windows of each room frame the scene like a painting. What they show changes through the day, and even rain is worth watching. Lying down in the tatami room brings the sea and greenery to eye level. On clear nights you can fall asleep looking at stars through a high window.
In spring 2023 a wood-fired barrel sauna was added beside the stream. It is Finnish in style and reserved entirely for guests. Parking is available.Doors open at 15:00 and close behind you at 20:00 the next day. Yakushima Airport is about 40 minutes away by car and Anbo Port about 25; a rental car is recommended.
