At Pet-Friendly Glamping, 36% of the Units Take Dogs: Facilities Belong to the Unit, Not the Site

· 泊まり火編集部

Etowa Kasama in Ibaraki has four unit types.

SKY CABIN comes with a private sauna and its own shower room. The description of GRACE TENT reads:

A heated and cooled tent. Shower and toilet are in the main cabin.

They sit side by side on the same booking page. In one you shower in your unit; in the other you walk to a building.

Three units inside one site

304 glamping sites publish their unit types, 1,001 between them. The median site has three, the largest has nine. 257 of the 304 (85%) have two or more.

A villa is rented whole, so the site and the unit are the same thing. Glamping puts several structures on a plot and asks which one you want. Bring the villa way of searching here and something stops fitting.

What you assumed belonged to the site belongs to the unit.

One unit in three takes a dog

Pets showed it most clearly.

187 pet-friendly glamping sites publish unit types, 695 units between them, and 253 of those units read as taking dogs. That is 36%.

Among the 170 with two or more unit types, only 13 have every unit reading as dog-friendly. 133 have some units only; the remaining 24 do not say at unit level.

The shape is fairly fixed: one or two dedicated structures called a dog cabin, dog dome or dog terrace. At Glamping Resort Awaji in Hyogo, of two unit types only the Dog Terrace Premium takes dogs; the Ocean Terrace says nothing about it.

Yatsugatake PRIVATE WOODS NADA in Nagano shows the structure plainly.

Unit type Capacity Facilities listed
Standard Cabin 1 to 4 Whole-cabin rental, about 80 sqm, private half-open-air bath, barrel sauna
Deluxe Cabin 1 to 5 Whole-cabin rental, about 80 sqm, private half-open-air bath, barrel sauna
Dog Cabin 1 to 4 Private dog run, dogs welcome

Bring the dog and the sauna and the open-air bath drop out of the description. Both exist on the site, so “sauna, pet-friendly” is not wrong about the site. You simply cannot have both at once.

What changes from unit to unit

For the 257 sites with two or more unit types, we counted where the descriptions split inside a single site.

Facility Some units only Every unit
Pets 134 sites 13 sites
Bath or shower 99 33
Sauna 73 16
Toilet 45 11
Open-air or hot spring 41 32
Kitchen 31 5
Pool 29 4
Jacuzzi 24 2

For every facility, “some units only” outnumbers “every unit”. The exception is the open-air and hot spring line at 41 against 32, where the gap is small. Hot water is piped to the plot, which makes it harder to fit to some structures and not others.

The 45 sites splitting on toilets were a surprise to read. At Sunshine Glamping Etajima in Hiroshima, the Sauna Garden Dome and Dog Garden Dome list a private shower and toilet; the Deluxe Dome and Eco Dome do not. The same shape as Etowa Kasama at the top.

Saunas behaved the same way. Of the 164 sites with a sauna and two or more unit types, 16 mention it for every unit. 73 mention it for some, and for 75 the unit descriptions do not say. In what “sauna included” does not tell you we noted that a glamping sauna is sometimes something on the grounds that you book by the hour. Seen unit by unit, there is a step before that: whether it is attached to your structure at all.

An eight-person villa and a two-person trailer, same site

The widest spread was Future RESORT in Shiga, with seven unit types.

At the top, Tsuki no Mune is a whole-house villa for up to eight with a half-open-air bath, a private pool and a barrel sauna. The smallest, the Camping unit, is a camping trailer for two, listed with a TV and air conditioning. Taiyo no Mune takes six plus two dogs, with a private jacuzzi and a dog run.

Book the same site name and what you get depends entirely on which you take. Capacity alone runs from two to eight.

Across all 1,001 unit types, 348 (35%) are domes, 230 (23%) are cabins, villas, cottages or trailers, and 221 (22%) are tents. Facilities are mentioned at these rates: bath or shower 288 (29%), pets 254 (25%), open-air or hot spring 194 (19%), sauna 178 (18%), toilet 102 (10%), BBQ 103 (10%), kitchen 62 (6%), pool 59 (6%), jacuzzi 39 (4%).

Choosing the unit is not the last choice

Glamping has stay plans as well as unit types. 260 sites publish them, 551 plans between them, a median of two per site.

383 of the plans (70%) mention BBQ and 200 (36%) read as including ingredients. On the other side, 146 (26%) are room-only and 139 (25%) mention bringing your own. 146 sites offer a room-only plan.

So the split happens twice. In the same structure, some nights dinner arrives and some nights you shop on the way.

About these figures

We counted mechanically across the 333 glamping sites listed on Tomaribi: the 304 that publish unit types (1,001 types) and the 260 that publish stay plans (551 plans). The 321 villas are rented whole and have no unit types, so they are not in this count.

Unit facilities come from a single line our editors write from what each property publishes. What is not written does not mean it is not there. Some of it drops out in summarising, and some properties do not describe their units separately. What this article counts is whether it is written where you choose a unit, not whether the facility exists.

“Some units only” means a site with two or more unit types where at least one unit, but not all, mentions the word. Pets start from the site’s pet-friendly flag and saunas from the site’s facility tag, then get matched against the unit descriptions.

You filter by site, the unit decides

When you filter, what comes back is sites. Pet-friendly, sauna, pool. That means it exists somewhere on the site, and that is not wrong.

What you sleep in, though, is the unit. Take a dog and you take the dog structure; want a sauna and you take the sauna structure. Often those are two different structures.

When the unit types are listed on the booking page, read that one line rather than the site description. As with the GRACE TENT at Etowa Kasama, what you need is usually right there.

FAQ

If a site says pet-friendly, can I take a dog to any unit?
Not necessarily. Across the 187 pet-friendly glamping sites that publish unit types, 253 of 695 units (36%) read as taking dogs. Of the 170 with two or more unit types, only 13 have every unit reading as dog-friendly. One or two dedicated units, a dog cabin or dog dome, is the usual pattern.
At a glamping site with a sauna, will my unit have one?
Worth checking. Of the 164 sites with a sauna and two or more unit types, 16 mention a sauna for every unit. 73 mention it for some units only, and for the rest the unit descriptions do not say.
How many unit types does one glamping site have?
A median of three. The 304 sites that publish unit types have 1,001 between them, and 257 of those sites (85%) have two or more. The largest has nine.
Do all units have their own toilet and shower?
It depends on the unit. 102 of 1,001 unit types (10%) mention a private toilet. Within one site you can find units with their own shower standing next to units that walk to a shared building.
What should I check before booking?
Check the name of the unit type you are about to book, not the name of the site. Dogs, saunas, baths and toilets attach to the unit. Meal plans are separate again: 260 sites publish 551 plans between them, and 146 offer a room-only plan.
