At the foot of Mount Asama on the Gunma-Nagano border, Sweet Grass Kita-Karuizawa is a year-round campground run for 30 years by Kitamoc, which tends the surrounding forest; its signature is a wood-fire stay where you split and burn firewood cut on site. Accommodation is wide-ranging - cottages equipped down to the bath, toilet and cookware for a near-hands-free stay, cabin-style huts with a wood stove and minimal furniture, tree houses, and tent sites from powered plots to permanent tarps - and many units have a fire hearth, wood stove, fireplace or stone oven for wood-fire cooking and BBQ (firewood included in the rate). The Northland Cottage even has a barrel sauna (one unit only, by reservation). It is notably pet-friendly, with dog-friendly units in every category and fenced dog runs where up to three dogs may stay off-leash and cage-free, plus the on-site Asama Hutte cafe and marche for morning and lunch.
