Hirado Yokota stands at Takezakimen in Tabira, Hirado City, Nagasaki, looking out to sea, and is let to one group a day. It opened in 2018, taking its cue from the albergo diffuso idea of a hotel spread through a whole community.
The building is a single storey built in the traditional manner of the Hirado region, with an engawa veranda running along it. Every room has a sea view. It takes one to fifteen guests, with numbers negotiable.
A BBQ garage stands on the grounds. A charcoal grill, paper plates and cups and tongs are provided, so charcoal, ingredients and seasonings are all you need to bring. The idea is that you buy Hirado produce at the local farm stands and carry it back.
The half-open-air outdoor bath came from a simple thought: how luxurious it would be to soak while looking at Hirado's plain, empty landscape. That emptiness is why the night sky is what it is; on a clear night you will catch shooting stars several times an hour. There is an indoor bath as well, and a private cinema.
Central Hirado is about 15 minutes away, central Nagasaki and Fukuoka about 110, and Nagasaki Airport about 90. There is generous parking.You take the keys at 15:00 and return them by 10:00. Rates start at 5,900 yen per person for a party of five.
