Whole-house villas set among the woods at Tokorono in Nikko, Tochigi, run by Rakuten STAY. There are twenty-one in all.
Each exceeds 100 square metres. They come with natural hot-spring water, a private sauna, an open-air air-bath deck and a terrace with a garden; some units add a jet bath or a cold bath.
There are two types. The single-storey type suits six to eight guests, and the two-storey maisonette takes up to ten, so you choose by party size and how you want to spend the time. Some units accept pets.
JR and Tobu Nikko stations, and Nikko Toshogu shrine, are about five minutes away by car, which makes this an easy base for sightseeing. There is no official website; bookings are taken through Rakuten Travel, Ikyu and similar sites. Rates start at 75,000 yen per night.
