Whole-house lodgings on the coast at Kusugawa in Yakushima Town, Kagoshima. Three units of differing character, SORA, UMI and LANI, all face the sea.
Each has a kitchen, a work space, a BBQ terrace, a bathroom and a sauna. Every room was designed to look out at the water, and hinoki is used generously right up to the bathroom ceilings, so opening the door releases the scent of the wood.
The sauna is an ocean-view barrel type, electric, with self-loyly. The cold bath draws on Yakushima spring water, and you cool down on a deck facing the sea. LANI has a wood-fired sauna built from local Yakushima cedar; the firewood comes from the island's forests, and burning it releases the cedar's particular scent. Aromas produced by Yawaraka, a maker in the same town, are provided, along with sauna fragrances for self-loyly.
Meals are booked in advance. On the ocean-view BBQ terrace you grill Kagoshima black pork and wagyu alongside Yakushima seafood. Breakfast is either a spread built on Yakushima ingredients, with rice cooked in a clay pot and flying fish, or a lighter option.
Yakushima Airport is about nine minutes away by car. Wi-Fi is available and there is parking. Pets are generally not allowed indoors, though enquiries are accepted.
