Whole-house villas in Sango, a green area of Haruka-cho in Otaru, Hokkaido, looking out toward Ishikari Bay.
SHUN, which opened in 2023, has a double-height picture window and a wood stove, several bedrooms and bathrooms that each differ. KAORU is a home-camping type, with a fire pit and a sauna on a wooden deck facing the forest. Three more units have since been added, and the site also holds a restaurant, a shop and an atelier. Some units let you spend time with your dog beside the barrel sauna on the deck.
The Sango project comes from Sango Komuten, which has been building houses in Hokkaido since 1958. The villas follow the theme of staying as though you lived in Hokkaido, conceived as an extension of the house. The company works under a pledge to use larch throughout its buildings, and the villas draw on Hokkaido timber including larch and southern Hokkaido cedar.
A breakfast plan comes with bread from Pain Yorutono, made entirely with organic Tokachi wheat. New Chitose Airport is about an hour away via the Doo Expressway, exiting at Zenibako IC. Central Sapporo and Otaru are about 40 minutes by car, Niseko about an hour and a half. Wi-Fi is available during the stay, and parking is on site.
