FARM VILLA taku sits inside the grounds of the Takeshita farm at Matarakku in Nakashibetsu, Hokkaido, not far from Shiretoko, and is let to one group a day.
A wood stove burns indoors. Past the flame, through the window, pasture opens out. Being inside a working farm is simply what the view is.
There are two twin bedrooms, each with two semi-double beds. With single sofa beds used as extra beds, the villa sleeps up to eight.
No meals are served, but the kitchen is complete: a three-ring gas hob, fridge, coffee maker, toaster, oven, dishwasher, tableware and cookware. Seasonings run to salt, sugar, soy sauce, mirin, cooking sake, vinegar, olive oil, rice oil, sesame oil, pepper, ichimi and shichimi, mayonnaise and chuno sauce, and about 1.5 kilos of rice is provided. There is a bathtub and shower, a washing machine and a dryer. Wi-Fi runs on Starlink.
For dinner you can order the taku farm meal kit as an option, designed to need only simple cooking. Central Nakashibetsu, where the restaurants and supermarkets are, is about 20 minutes away by car, so it comes down to shopping before you arrive or booking the kit in advance.
Rates are 130,000 yen including tax per night, cheaper over consecutive nights. That is the base rate for the whole villa, so it does not change for parties of four or fewer, or with the number of preschool children sharing beds. From five guests, an extra bed is charged at 5,000 yen including tax per bed per night.
