SAUNARF Iseshima stands at Kokufu in Ago, Shima City, Mie, two minutes on foot from the surf break at Kokufu-Shirahama. It is let to one group a day, has three bedrooms plus a living-dining-kitchen, and sleeps up to eight. The old streets around it invite walking.
Each of the three bedrooms holds two single beds, and two futon sets can be laid in the living room. Every room has a work desk and Wi-Fi reaches throughout, so working from here is part of the design. The large living-dining space with its open kitchen comes with a fridge, kitchen appliances, cookware and even glasses and plates.
The sauna is a MISA brought over from Finland. The room is insulated and lined in hinoki, which holds both the heat and the scent; the temperature stays up through loyly, so you sweat differently. It seats three. The sauna area has a shower, a cold plunge and an ice maker, with three outdoor chairs. On the terrace you can cool down in the sea breeze without anyone in sight. Swimwear or sauna wear is required, and using the sauna after drinking is discouraged.
The house was designed around a life of working and surfing in the same day. Seven hundred metres to the south is Ago-no-Matsubara beach, lined with beach huts in summer; to the north is one of the better surf spots in central and western Japan, host to national competitions including the All Japan Surfing Championships.
The grounds are non-smoking, and fireworks and pets are not allowed. Parking takes two cars. Ugata Station on the Kintetsu Shima Line is about ten minutes away by car or taxi, or twelve by bus on the Anori line, alighting at Kokufu-jinja-mae. Check-in is from 16:00 and check-out by 11:00. Rates start at 45,500 yen a night.
