TUZUMI stands at Ezumi in Susami Town, Nishimuro, Wakayama, next to Kushimoto at the southern tip of Honshu. There are five guest villas, built in Kishu timber and divided into flat and maisonette types. Capacity is five.
Every villa has a covered outdoor living space and a natural hot-spring open-air bath. Art washi paper has been used inside, and when the light comes through it colours like stained glass. The windows look out over the Karekinada sea, which changes with the season and the hour.
There is a sauna, reserved by the hour; you need to arrange it in advance. Dinner plans that include sauna time, and a plan with an hour in the outdoor sauna, are both offered.
The food is built on local produce. Breakfast is local rice cooked in a clay pot, grilled fish and the house TUZUMI soup. Dinner takes local seafood, the region's inoshishi-buta pork and Kumano beef, and finishes them in a style drawn from southern France and southern Italy. Both meals are served privately on a dining terrace looking at the sea, where you can watch the cooking in front of you or join in.
There is morning yoga and workshops that change with the season. You can look out at an island designated a natural monument and at the sunset, then sit around the fire pit or drink local sake under the stars once the light goes. A day can pass without leaving.
Esunokawa beach, with its stretch of fine sand, is 15 minutes' walk away. Group and exclusive bookings are accepted from ten guests.
