Columns on Tomaribi always start the same way. “Of the 654 listings, N publish X.”
Here are all the Ns, lined up.
From 93% down to 3.6%
Against a denominator of 654 listings (published, duplicates excluded), the disclosure rates counted across these columns sort like this.
| Number | Stays publishing it | Share | Counted in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 611 | 93% | How many stays survive each filter |
| How to get there | 535 | 82% | Forty-one are walkable from a station |
| A guide rate | 318 | 49% | Per house or per person |
| Area in sqm | 199 | 30% | A 118sqm house in a 30,000sqm orchard |
| Building count (two or more) | 118 | 18% | Is anyone in the next cabin? |
| Parking spaces | 116 | 18% | Enough beds, not enough parking |
| Number of beds | 106 | 16% | Sleeps six, two beds |
| Opening year | 68 | 10% | What makes newer stays different |
| Bathroom count | 50 | 7.6% | More guests, same one bathroom |
| How children are counted | 24 | 3.6% | How many does a child count as? |
| Recommended party size | 12 | 1.8% | as above |
Two more, counted across the 321 villas only. Bedroom count at 134 (41%), check-in time at 93 (29%). Glamping listings come through a different data pipeline and carry neither, so those two are shares of villas alone.
From 93% for capacity down to 3.6% for how children are counted. A spread of twenty-six times.
What separates the top from the bottom
Line them up and a division appears.
At the top: capacity, how to get there, price. Every one of them is a field on a booking or search form. There is a box for party size, boxes for dates and location, a box for budget. Fields have to be filled in or the listing does not come up in a search. So they get filled in.
At the bottom: bathroom count, number of beds, parking spaces, how children are counted. No booking site has a field for any of them. With no field, the only place left is free text, where nothing is enforced and nothing drops out of a search for being absent.
What decides whether a number gets written down is not how much it matters. It is whether there is anywhere to write it.
Price at 49% needs a second explanation
One entry resists that account: the 49% for price. Price does have a field. And yet only half publish it.
As per house or per person found, the tendency to withhold rises at the top of the market. A field exists, but filling it in invites comparison. Rather than be compared and lose, let people enquire. With price, that calculation has room to operate.
So two forces set the disclosure rate. One is whether a field exists. The other is whether publishing pays. Capacity gets published because publishing puts you in the results. Price stays half-published because publishing gets you compared.
The bottom four all bite after you arrive
Sort the low end and a pattern shows. None of these numbers matter while you are booking. All of them matter once you are there.
Bathroom counts appear at 50 stays. Yet as more guests, same one bathroom found, 16 of the 27 stays sleeping eight or more have a single bathroom, and putting eight people through it in sequence means the last one finishes after midnight.
Bed counts appear at 106. HUMMER VILLAGE Amakusa, from sleeps six, two beds, sleeps six with beds for two and folding mattresses for the other four.
Parking appears at 116. As enough beds, not enough parking found, one house sleeps 30 and has three spaces.
How children are counted appears at 24. As how many does a child count as found, the same “sleeps six” means six adults at one property and six adults plus four preschoolers at another.
What you can compare on a booking screen is the top of the list. What decides how the trip goes is the bottom.
Some things never become a number at all
There is another kind of information that never reaches this table, because it is not a number.
As 395 have a sauna, 102 mention a cold bath counted, of the 395 stays with a sauna only seven state all four of type, löyly, cold bath and cooling off. A cold bath is mentioned at 102 (26%), löyly at 61 (15%).
Here a second constraint joins the first. Not only is there no field, there is no one-line answer. Capacity is a single figure; the make-up of a sauna takes a few sentences. Whether a property writes those sentences depends on whether it considers the sauna the point. Of the seven that covered all four, three had sauna in the name.
What this counts, and what it does not
The denominator is 654 listings (published, duplicates excluded). Each figure was counted as described in its own column; nothing was recounted here. Some come from structured tags (capacity, price, bedrooms, bathrooms, check-in) and some from mechanically reading listing text (area, building count, parking, beds, opening year, how children are counted). The second group is coarser than the first.
Bedroom count and check-in time use the 321 villas as their denominator because glamping data holds neither. They are not directly comparable with the rest.
And once more: a listing that says nothing is not a property that lacks the thing. What is counted is not existence but whether you can find out before booking.
Ask from the bottom up
Search from the top of the list. Ask from the bottom.
Narrow by capacity, location and price. That part finishes on the screen. Then, of the few that survive, start asking upward from the lowest disclosure rate. How many bathrooms. What the bedding is. How many cars fit. From what age a child counts as one person.
Every one of those comes back in a single exchange. And not one of them exists as a field on a booking form.
The numbers with no field are the ones that bite once you are there. That, in the end, is what this year of counting has been about.
FAQ
- Which number do properties publish most?
- Capacity. 611 of the 654 stays listed on Tomaribi publish it, or 93%. Next comes the access line describing how to get there, at 535 (82%), then a guide rate at 318 (49%).
- And which is published least?
- How children are counted, at 24 stays (3.6%). Next fewest are bathroom counts at 50 (7.6%) and opening years at 68 (10%). All three matter once you are there, and almost none of them can be read before booking.
- Why are some numbers written down and others not?
- Largely by whether a booking or search form has a field for them. There are fields for party size, dates, location and price. There is no field for the number of bathrooms, the bedding breakdown or how children are counted. A number with no field has nowhere to be written.
- Does silence mean the facility is lacking?
- No. What is counted is not whether something exists but whether you can find out before booking. It is less that a property hides its single bathroom, and more that there is nowhere in the form to state a bathroom count at all.
- What should I do before booking?
- The lower the disclosure rate, the more worth asking about. Bathroom count, bedding breakdown, parking spaces, how children are counted. All of them come back in a single exchange of email.
