箱根懐來(はこね かいらい)
A single-storey villa on 1,800 square metres deep in Sengokuhara, Hakone, circling between an undiluted hot-spring bath, a hinoki sauna adjustable by the degree, and a 70-square-metre terrace facing Mt. Kintoki.
Hakone Kairai opened in May 2025 near the pampas grasslands of Sengokuhara in Hakone, Kanagawa, taking one group a day. A trim single-storey villa sits on grounds of about 1,800 square metres, roughly 70 minutes by car from Tokyo. It takes two to four guests.
The open-air hot-spring bath runs on undiluted source water, a sodium chloride spring that holds heat well and keeps you warm afterwards. At pH 8.6 it is alkaline and soft on the skin, rich in metasilicic acid.
The sauna is lined in hinoki and takes loyly. The temperature adjusts a degree at a time between 35 and 110, and there is room to spare for five adults, with a Bluetooth speaker inside. A cold plunge sits outside right beside it, and from there you can circulate without a break between the open terrace, the hinoki indoor bath and the hot-spring bath. The terrace behind the building runs to 70 square metres and looks toward Mt. Kintoki.
The living room rises to an open ceiling, its large white wall serving as the screen for a home theatre with a 4K projector and a Dolby Atmos sound bar; beyond the window lies a Japanese garden. There is underfloor heating. The bedroom is a twin with two semi-double beds, and futons can be laid on 23 tatami-mats' worth of Ryukyu tatami; for parties of three or more an accordion curtain divides the space. The dining room is a sunken-hearth style table for six.
The kitchen holds a four-door fridge-freezer, microwave, toaster oven, kettle and espresso machine. For safety, open flames and cooking with your own ingredients are not permitted, though bringing food and drink is fine. On dinner-course plans the mini bar is all-inclusive.
Meals are prepared by a chef who knows the local produce intimately: shabu-shabu of selected wagyu, or a course of seasonal dishes and wagyu.
A dedicated concierge explains everything at check-in and then keeps entries to a minimum, handling service at meals and cleaning on multi-night stays; you can decline this when booking. Bathrobes, samue, tabi and even sauna hats are provided, so you can arrive empty-handed. Swimwear is not lent. Parking takes two cars. Rates start at 60,000 yen per person.
