LUX HAKONE YUMOTO stands at Yumoto-Chaya in Hakone Town, Ashigarashimo, Kanagawa, ringed by the Hakone mountains. There are only two villas, so only two groups a day. Lux is Latin for light, and from behind the high walls of the site what you see is the mountains, the sky, and the light of the sun and stars.
Each villa has its own pool and sauna. The pool is heated from 25 April to 31 October 2026; outside that period it serves as the cold plunge after the sauna. At night it is lit, and you can look up past the water at the sky.
The hot spring is inside each villa: a view bath and an open-air bath, both entirely private. Counting the view bath upstairs and the shower room downstairs, there are two bathrooms per villa.
The buildings are two storeys. The ground floor holds three bedrooms of distinct character, a master, a triple and a tatami loft room, which works for three families or a group of friends. Upstairs, the living and dining room opens around a terrace, and the peninsula kitchen has everything you need.
The villas are dog-friendly, with a small garden where your dog can be, and guests arriving with a dog are given superfood treats for it.
Hakone-Yumoto Station on the Odakyu line is about 13 minutes' walk. Rates start at 198,000 yen a night.
