A small cottage hotel at Ama in Minamiawaji, Hyogo, at the southern tip of Awaji Island, held between sea and mountain. There are only five cottages, appearing at the end of a winding climb.
Each carries a name taken from the view through its window. From the moment you open the door, time here begins to move on its own terms. On the bed sits a book with hints for the stay.
In the sauna you hear the trees, and from the open-air spa you see the stars. In the evening each terrace has a fire to sit around in the quiet. Meals draw on the produce of Awaji Island.
About twenty minutes on foot from the cottages, a quiet stretch of sea opens up. Free Wi-Fi is available. The property is operated by Balnibarbi.Arrival runs from 15:00 to 21:00 and departure is by 11:00. Rates start at 35,000 yen per night.
