Kito NASU is a whole-house villa at Takaku-ko in Nasu Town, Tochigi, finished throughout in solid wood. It has four bedrooms and sleeps up to eight, and is used as much for long stays and workations as for short trips.
The sauna is wood-fired, heating slowly. Called Kino Sauna, it was designed as a large tree standing beside the house: the trunk is the sauna room, the branches and leaves the roof. Rainwater running off it collects in a hollow that becomes the cold plunge, more puddle than pool. Shade in summer, light through bare branches in winter, the sound of rain dripping from leaves. A tree is not strictly necessary to living, but life is richer for having one, and the sauna was built as that kind of presence. It was designed by the artist behind the Sento Zukai series, which renders public bathhouses in isometric drawing and watercolour.
Indoors there is a wood stove, with firewood provided for both the stove and the sauna. Tending a fire is meant to be part of the stay rather than a chore. BBQ is an option. There is a kitchen and Wi-Fi.
Shopping is close at hand: The Big Nasu supermarket is three minutes' walk and the Komeri hardware store five, where firewood and BBQ supplies are also sold.
Check-in is self-service. Entering your details and paying in advance on a phone or computer shortens the process on the day.
Central Tokyo is about two hours away. JR Kuroiso Station is about five minutes by taxi, JR Nasushiobara Station about fifteen, and Nasu IC about five.
