A rental house in the forest of Yatsugatake in Hokuto City, Yamanashi. These are proper log houses built by Finland's Honka, and there are two of them.
Kittila looks as though it grew out of the Yatsugatake woods, and inside you are surrounded by solid wood furniture. Tuusula is a log house with a modern hand, and its large living-room window frames Kaikomagatake and Mount Fuji. Both are built from solid pine, with natural materials carried through to the window frames, flooring, bathroom tiles and kitchen doors.
Inside there is a high-ceilinged living and dining room, a modern kitchen stocked with Marimekko and Iittala tableware, two separate bedrooms plus a loft, a generous powder room and bathroom, and a covered wooden deck. A drum washer-dryer, wood stove, BBQ grill, Bluetooth audio, fast Wi-Fi and a large television with Netflix make longer stays and workations straightforward.
It is about two hours from central Tokyo, with easy access to the Kiyosato highlands and Kobuchizawa. Rates start at 31,900 yen per night, with 6,600 to 9,900 yen including tax for each additional guest.
